CALHOUN, Alvia “Al”

Alvia Odborne Calhoun passed away suddenly but peacefully at the age of 92. Al is survived by his wife and best friend Renia and their five children: Al (Lena), Dale (Wendy), Janice (Barry), David (Tara-Lee), Donna (Chris), 14 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and his beloved sister Ruth Nowasad.
Al was a respected and honorable man whose passions were his family and square dance calling. Al served in the Canadian Armed Forces as a military police officer and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his service in the Korean War. Al and Renia enjoyed a wonderful life together; travelling the world throughout their square dance career. He was a respected and gifted square caller and he and Renia truly enjoyed their 50 years of whirling, twirling and teaching square dancing.

I will remember your dad as a larger than life personality. He had the ability to control things just with the power in his voice. His stature also got attention.

We will all miss Big Al at morning coffee and walks around Sun Pointe. It was very nice to get to know him. My sincere sympathies to Renia and all the family.

I am going to miss your dad so much. He was always such a gentle and caring man and his love for his family was amazing to see. I am going to miss his walks by my office and his beautiful smile.

Al will be missed here at Sun Pointe by his many friends. I didn't know him long, but enjoyed his good natured company.
