CALEY, Margaret Olive
1919 – 2011


Margaret Caley was born near Gilbert Plains, Manitoba on June 10, 1919 and passed away at the Spring Valley Care Centre on May 19, 2011 in Kelowna at the age of 91. She was the eldest daughter of George and Lillian (Bassett) Plummer. After high school she attended Normal School in Brandon and taught at Strathcona School outside of Gilbert Plains for 3 years. During the war Margaret spent 3 and a half years in Ottawa working on victory bonds. After the war she returned to teach another year at Strathcona and one year in Gilbert Plains. In 1948 she married George Mills and moved to Kelowna. Here they operated a poultry farm on Barnaby Road. She taught in a private school in Kelowna for a short time and also worked in Hall’s store in the Mission. After George passed away in 1971, she married Bill Caley in 1973. Margaret was active for many years with Girl Guides and was District Commissioner from 1969-1974. She was a dedicated volunteer in the Respiratory Club, the CN Pensioners and worked actively in St. Paul’s United Church for many years. In 1999 she was the recipient of the Sarah Donalda Treadgold Memorial award in recognition of an overall outstanding contribution to the well being of the City of Kelowna by a woman. Margaret was predeceased by her first husband George Mills in 1971 and her second husband Bill Caley in 1986 as well as her parents George and Lillian Plummer and a brother Benson Plummer. Survived by a sister Alice Davidson (Morley), nieces: Donna Cruickshank (Ron), Maxine Davidson and Bonnie Fisher and nephews Dale Plummer (Lorna) and Kelly Plummer (Debbie) as well as several nieces and nephews by marriage.
