BEATTY, Christine Elizabeth
December 27, 1959 - August 24, 2011
With profound sadness we announce the sudden and unexpected passing of Christine Elizabeth Beatty in Kelowna, British Columbia on August 24, 2011.
Christine leaves behind her husband Robert Flynn and their beloved daughter Elizabeth. Also left to mourn are her brothers, Bill (Mandy) and Scott (Arlyne), sister, Kathy (Bruce) and father, Bill (Caroll) (predeceased by her mother Janet), sisters-in-law Johanna (Brendan), Gwen, Geri and brother-in-law Tony. She was also a devoted aunt and will be missed dearly by her nephews.
Christine was an accomplished lawyer and mediator. She graduated from York University and then Osgoode Hall Law School and was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1986. She practiced with Fraser and Beatty in Toronto and then for the Bank of Montreal. Her passion, though, was for mediation where she felt her skills were most useful and after working as a mediator for the Ontario Government she established her own successful practice. Christine also was a respected instructor and tutor to prospective lawyers for the Law Society of Upper Canada. Called, as well, to the Bar of Jamaica, she was involved in the development of a conflict resolution curriculum and training for schools Island wide. She had successfully completed the Harvard Law School Negotiation Project for lawyers and was a consultant assisting Osgoode Hall Law School with the establishment of the LLM program in Alternative Dispute Resolution. Her mediation skills and interest in youth caused her to become involved in a restorative justice program through Peacebuilders International (Canada) diverting youth from the criminal justice system. She loved the outdoors and visited Algonquin Provincial Park every summer with her family and friends. She was a fun loving, devoted mother caring dearly for her little girl, Elizabeth. Christine was an intelligent, hard working, creative and elegant woman who always found time to lend an ear and assist those in need of her expertise.
A memorial service was held on Saturday, September 10, 2011 at 1:00 p.m.
