BAUER, Georgene (Gene)

BAUER, Georgene (Gene)

Gene Bauer passed away peacefully April 29, 2017 at the age of 91. She is survived by her sons, David and Chris, both of Kelowna as well as many nieces and nephews. Gene was predeceased by her husband Victor in 2003.

Gene was born in Elgin, Manitoba to George and Elizabeth Robinson on Feb 23, 1926. Upon graduation of her secretarial training she moved to Edmonton, Alberta and then to Victoria, BC. In 1950 she moved to Whitehorse, Yukon where she met and married Victor Bauer in 1952. Victor and Gene spent many years in the Yukon, with Victor working for an oil company on the pipeline. David was born in 1957 followed by Chris in 1959. They retired to Kelowna in 1975 to enjoy the fine weather and start the first of many gardens.

Gene was trained in classical piano and played piano and organ for many organizations over the years. During the years on the pipeline Gene would play for Elks Club dances and belonged to a troop of actors that entertained cruise ship passengers. She began painting wildlife during her Yukon stay and helped to start the Whitehorse Art Society. She was skilled in watercolors and acrylics. Gene was the secretary of the Rutland Palatte Pals for six years. Her paintings have graced many homes and institutions.

Gene and Victor loved to travel and visited many places around the world. They enjoyed cruises to the Mediterranean and the Caribbean, often wintering in the South Pacific. They made many friends in their eleven winters spent in Yuma, Arizona.

While in the Yukon, Gene enjoyed skiing and curling. In the southern climes, she was an avid golfer and swimmer. In her later years, she enjoyed carpet bowling in Kelowna. She was well known in the family for always having the right word for the crossword puzzle.

    Dear David and Chris,

I had the privilege of knowing and looking after your mother for the last 15 years. Her paintings hung for display throughout our former office so we were witness to her passion. She was very proud of the two of you as evidenced whenever I asked what the "boys" were up to.

Melody and I will miss her warmth, softness and subtle humor. Gene was a great lady.

I did not know Gene but worked with her son David. She certainly had a great deal of talent. Whenever her son spoke of her I could tell he was proud. Very sorry to hear of her passing. S Williams

Our condolences to the Bauer Family.

Gene was a valued member of our art group, Palette Pals.

She was a lovely gentle lady with lots of artistic talent. She gave us many interesting stories of her experiences of the time she lived in the north and she used that in many of her art projects. Our group will miss her.

    Sincerely, Fay Page
