ABNEY, Evelyn Kathleen Whitby

Evelyn Kathleen Abney (nee Whitby) passed away peacefully after a short illness on August 11th, 2011.

Loving wife of Donald Abney, and the ‘Queen of Balmoral’ to her many friends, she has long been known to everyone as Jackie.

She was born on February 22nd, 1924 in Newport, Isle of Wight, England to Edith Keay and Arthur Marnoch Whitby. Among her many achievements, she is proud to have lived in Sterling Castle, Scotland, and served in the WAFs during World War II as a driver.

She married Jacques Dansereau in 1944, then serving with the Canadian forces, and came to Canada as a war bride soon after, living in Quebec City, Montreal and Baie Comeau. She was widowed at an early age.

As a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she leaves behind Suzanne, Lorraine, Pierre and his fiancée Beth Flory, Claire Dansereau, and grandchildren Jeremy, Mathieu, Britta, her husband Simon Collins and great-granddaughter Nadia. She also leaves behind Don and Dolly Abney and their children Matthew, Zachary, and Gillian; Chuck Abney (and Kathy Mills) and their children Jordan (and Jody), Richard, Kevin and Lauren; and Julie (Abney) and Gary Wallin and their children Stacey, Stewart, Cassidy, and Brady as well as Marla Smith, Donald MacDonald, and members of the extended Abney and Dansereau families.

She was an avid curler in Saint Lambert, Quebec, Oakville, Ontario and in Kelowna soon after arriving with Don in 1986. She was a member of the Kelowna Newcomers Club and its president for 3 years; and member of the Plus 3 Club for 22 years, also becoming its president for a time. She was inducted into the 83rd Wing of the RCAF in Kelowna. She was loved by so many for her sweet, kind and outgoing nature as well as her sense of adventure. Her warmth, generosity and welcoming smile will be greatly missed.

Memorial service will be held at Springfield Funeral Home, Kelowna BC, 2020 Springfield Road on Tuesday August 16th, 2011, at 1:00pm.
