Mexico City fines concert for drug ballad

Mexican city officials seeking to ban drug ballads known as "narco corridos" have levied one of their stiffest punishments yet against the music, fining concert promoters 100,000 pesos (almost $8,000).

The city of Chihuahua says the fine was for a performance by Alfredo Rios, better known as "El Komander." He is one of the best-known singers of the "Altered Movement" genre whose lyrics frequently focus on shootouts, killings and guns.

Chihuahua City is the capital of the state of the same name. Thousands of people in the state have died in drug-related violence in recent years.

City assistant government secretary Javier Torres said Friday the concert promoter forfeited a 100,000-peso deposit for the weekend concert.

Torres said the money will be used to buy computers for community centres.
