Sinkhole swallows two cars

Two vehicles fell into a sinkhole on a Los Angeles street Friday night, after heavy rains continue to ravage the city.

Firefighters attended Laurel Canyon Boulevard in Studio City just before 10 p.m. and found an upside down car in the growing hole, about three metres down.

Fire crews lowered a ladder down into the hole and rescued the 48-year-old woman who was trapped below.

The woman, who was OK, told firefighters she was driving, when the road opened up in front of her and swallowed her car whole.

She said that as she sat in her car with water pouring inside, she thought she was going to die.

The hole grew bigger and eventually swallowed a second vehicle. The driver of the second vehicle was able to remove himself from the hole.

The vehicles have since been removed from the hole.

The heavy rain has battered Southern California, dropping 20 centimetres Friday in some areas, and destroying roads.

A firetruck fell off the highway in the Cajon Pass when the road gave way, but no one was injured.

The rains are expected to continue through Saturday.
