Plane's long crash history

Castanet is learning more information about the plane involved in a fatal crash that killed four people, including former Alberta premier Jim Prentice.

The Cessna 500 Citation I C-GTNG owned by Norjet Inc. took off from Kelowna International Airport Thursday evening at 9:32 p.m.

Surrey Air Traffic Control Centre first alerted Kelowna RCMP about losing contact with the downed plane at 10:07 p.m. Thursday.

The Cessna Citation was en route to Calgary, but only made it about 10 kilometres from Kelowna's airport before crashing.

This specific plane took its first flight in 1974 and was not reportedly involved in any previous accidents or incidents.

However, the type of plane has been involved in dozens.

The model, a Cessna C500, was first manufactured in 1969. Production of the plane stopped in 1985 with a total of 377 planes manufactured.

According to Aviation Safety Network, a Cessna C500 has been involved in 72 occurrences in the plane's history.

Sixty-one of those accidents were 'hull-loss' accidents that have cost the lives of a 126 people in total.

In December 1983, a C500 crashed in the United Kingdom killing all 10 occupants on board. The cause of the crash was blamed on the pilot. The pilot was allegedly unaware of his true altitude which caused the plane to hit the ocean.

In May 1990, a C500 crashed in Australia killing all 11 occupants. The causal factors of that crash remain undetermined.

The only other fatal C500 crash in Canada took place in September 1984 in Orillia, Ont. The pilot lost control during a training flight and the crash killed the two crew members on board.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada is investigating the crash in Winfield.

One local pilot thought, given the weather, ice on the wings could be the cause.

Julie Leroux, with the TSB, says the investigators will conduct interviews with first responders, examine the wreckage, review the plane's maintenance records and look into the weather conditions at the time the plane went down to determine the cause of the fatal crash.

Leroux says it is too early to know the cause at this stage in their investigation.

The Aviation Safety Network is a private, independent initiative founded in 1996 that covers accidents and safety issues with regards to airliners, military transport planes and corporate jets.

The ASN Safety Database contains detailed descriptions of more than 20,300 incidents, hijackings and accidents.

The ASN states that the majority of the information on site is based on information from official sources such as government authorities and safety boards.
