Meteor streaks the sky

A meteor streaking across the sky above the eastern U.S. and Canada over the weekend was witnessed by hundreds of people.

One was an airplane pilot who had a bird’s-eye view of the fireball. Mike Grossman was flying 1,500 feet above the Hudson River near New York City in his Piper Archer aircraft when he witnesses the spectacle.

Grossman captured the fireball with his GoPro about 6 p.m. Saturday. The meteor is hard to spot in the footage, so Grossman has slowed it down and pointed viewers to the top right corner of the video.

People living in Virginia, Washington, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, New York, Delaware, Ohio, Kentucky and even Ontario reported seeing the video, according to the Huffington Post.

While driving through Falls Church, Virginia Alex Salvador managed to capture the fireball on his vehicle’s dashcam.

According to NASA, every day about 100 tons of meteoroids – fragments of dust and gravel and sometimes even big rocks – enter the Earth's atmosphere.  Most meteorites fall in the ocean, lakes, forests, farmer's fields, or the Antarctic. The majority will never be found.
