What-s-On

Junkyard Percussion Playground

There's a new Much Music in town. Actually does anyone actually expect to catch a music video on Much Music anymore?

Let me start again. There is a new on demand TV channel in BC/Alberta that is adding some amazing new music videos to this countries musical landscape. Its being done by Telus OptikLocal. In the last three months they have funded and helped create some of the best video content produced in the Okanagan's music scene. Let me show you.

Junkyard Percussion Playground

This is PGKEL#10. In the woods surrounding Kelowna at Bottega Farm Inn, local band We Are The City combine a wall of amps with junkyard percussion as they hand over their song, “Friends Hurt” to 60 audience members.

Playground is simple. We take a venue and turn it into a make-shift recording studio. We add a band, an audience, and give them one goal – create a song together in an hour, and then record it in one take. It’s a free event and anyone can sign up – the only rules being you leave your wallets at home and egos at the door (from http://playground.is).

Its a long video so I know I'm asking a lot but this video, concept, and end result (skip to the last 5 minutes of the video) is truly amazing.

I did want to make a special note here about the videos editor and director, Brandon William Fletcher. He is the Creative Director of the Habitat and has been honing his video skills even before he was the main videographer/producer during the highly successful Breakout West Festival here in Kelowna. He was also recently approved for more video funding from Telus OptikLocal (for a music video for the band BeeKeeper) so I look forward to seeing more great work coming from him in the next year.

Music Videos:

I caught so many new bands this summer it was dizzying but very few of them were lucky enough to win $5000 in production from the BC initiative by Public Records (funded again by Telus Optik Local). Visually stunning, the following video is by Kelowna-based indie rock band Nuuka and filmmakers Reveal Creative. Its the music video for their song "Desert".

Set in the depression-era, a man goes in search of a legendary buried treasure in the Colorado desert. Aided by a map and compass left to him by his grandfather, he treks for miles through various landscapes on his search, a desperate plan to save his family from losing their home. The desert in which it is buried, however, has other plans.

As an added bonus their EP is actually free (or techincally "name your price") on bandcamp.
