Bhangra invades the Okanagan

Author's disclosure: Global Music Fest is an annual event that I produce as part of Global Citizen Kelowna Week.

Global Music Fest fills the Laurel building this weekend with Andrew Allen headlining Friday night, and EnKarma are headlining the Saturday evening.

EnKarma are one of North America's pre-eminant Bhangra bands.

Artistic Director of Global Music Fest, Karma Lacoff, shares why she chose them to headline the Saturday night:

"Music transcends barriers between people. I was most excited to help with Global Music Fest for that reason. Its a way to share and experience, to be moved by something together and to just have a great time as a community. Reaching further into the realms of global and world music we wanted to bring the essence of a beat from a culture far abroad. Music is extremely important in most cultural celebrations around the world and as people have immigrated they have brought music with them. Often new cultural music gets changed significantly and that is a very brief summary of what happened when traditional Punjabi music and western music collided and immigrants started creating Bhangra music. Having En Karma play Global Music Fest is amazing to me because its this amazingly fun music with so much energy. Most of their music has a very recognizable dance beat, very western pop, but at the same time it sounds so different. My theory is that the specific instrumentation combination makes it an interesting mix of east meets west. The first time I saw this band was at the Salmon Arm Roots and Blues Fest in 2009. The four hundred or so other people at the Barn stage and I just couldn't stop dancing."

A little further down the valley in Lake Country Dehli 2Dublin hit the stage Friday night at the Creekside Theatre in Lake Country.

One of the most diverse acts in BC their sound is a mashup up of Bhangra, Celtic, Dub, Raggae, and Electronica,
