5 acts ready to hit it big in 2012

We have some amazing talent in this country.

As we are now one month into 2012 I wanted to make sure you know which acts have a decent chance of becoming Canada's next musical export to the world.

Full disclosure: my selections were slightly biased towards bands with a BC/Okanagan connection, but I didn't think you would mind.

In no particular order, here are the top 5 emerging acts that you should know about heading into 2012.

She has performed in Kelowna many times and was at one point living here for a number of years. She has recently undergone a transformation into a boni-fide pop star.

Her latest single, "The Noise," will tell you everything you need to know. Its a top notch production of her new sonic style while also showing some subtle Kyle Minogue and Dragonette influences.

This week MTV added "The Noise" to their rotation. Its also no surprise that her song "Sparks" was featured on Grey's Anatomy earlier this month.

We are the City

Its not every band that can brag about winning $150,000 to support their music career, but two years ago that was exactly what happened to our West Kelowna based indie rock band "We are the City".

Currently recording their new cd in Vancouver, we're looking forward to hearing the new sonic soundtrack that they create on their third studio album.

Ali Milner

Before she recently placed in the top 3 of CBC's Cover me Canada competition, she won top spot in our local Rockanagan concert series that was produced a few years ago.

I had a chance to catch her show at Sturgeon Hall that night and was blown away. Her voice is entrancing.

She's came a long way since that show at Sturgeon Hall but I am confident that she will be an act to keep an eye on this year.

Here is one of her performances from "Cover Me Canada":

Boom Booms

They have performed at Pop Okanagan and our local indie music hub "The Habitat," and recenlty won third place in the much loved Peak Performance Project. Their live stage/crowd energy is utterly amazing.

Catch the wonder when they come to town next. In the meantime here is a glimpse:

Andrew Allen

We will have an interview of Andrew next month but his career is already hitting the stratosphere. Last year alone he opened for Bruno Mars, One Republic, The Script, and many more.

Hailing from the Okanagan, he is our local lad that could.

His current single is a top ten hit in Canada and climbing in the US.  He is also headlining this year's rendition of Global Music Fest happening Feb 24th in Kelowna.

Tickets go on sale Feb 1st. http://www.globalcitizenkelowna.org/events/global-music-fest/

If you want another act I would recommend you check them out. They originally hailed from Kelowna, and with their new EP "Change", they are set to hit the road this spring.

Good things will surely follow.

Did I miss an act that you think is ready to fly. Let me know. Send me an email to [email protected]
