Tech community throws a party!

Accelerate Okanagan is hosting a New Year Kick Off Party on January 12th.

The event will feature a blend of live music from the Ozzy Ozmunds, Twisted Disco from Code: E and DJ Rich Taylor Esq, buffet style culinary delights and some Poker, Blackjack and Roulette to top it all off.

Tickets are $25 and can be bought at the following link: http://ao2012.eventbrite.com/

Headling the event is the Ozzy Ozmunds:

The following interview is with Shane Austin of PixelSavvy, an artist and community orientated tech savvy web designer. He also happens to be the founder of the Ozzy Ozmunds.

RD: Tell me about the Ozzy Ozmunds?

It's a concept cover band that performs covers of remakes of artists like Duran Duran, Neil Diamond and Van Morrison done in a fun, rocking style. We even throw in a few modern rock tunes to round things out. Check out our website at ozzyozmunds.com.

RD: Do you work for Accelerate Okanagan?

Accelerate Okanagan has graciously supported both myself and Daryl Chymko, who founded Okanagan co+Lab over a year ago. In addition I've been deeply involved with the community as an organizer at OKDG Okanagan Developers Group. I'm also quite proud of my web and interactive design consultancy, Pixel Savvy, which I've been growing since 2008.

RD: As a performer and an entrepreneur can you talk about the similarities in both fields? Do you feel that they feed each other?

I believe that the philosophies of creatives and technologists are comprised of similar value sets. From a personal standpoint I feel that being a creative pacifies the inner artist, while being a web tech professional helps me connect with the world and solve problems I see in it.

You might even say that these two sides behave symbiotically. I also place high value on family and community.

RD: What are your thoughts on the growing tech start up businesses in Kelowna?

We're in the verge of a massive industry explosion that's been in the makings for quite some time. It's extremely exciting to be a part of it.

RD: I also hear that your involved with a local non-profit supporting the tech community.

Digital Okanagan is being revitalized and I'm honored to be a part of the team to being this organization back to life. Watch for news on this in the near future: http://www.digitalokanagan.ca

If you haven't heard of Accelerate Okanagan, they are a locally based technology association whose goal is to increase the number of technology companies that start and grow in the Okanagan.

In November they received an impressive $2.1 million of funding from the federal government.
