For the month of September the Rotary Centre for the Arts is celebrating First Nations Arts and Culture throughout their venue. I caught up with Cori Derickson, one of the featured artists, to talk about her art on display and the stories behind some of her pieces. (See above video)
I wanted to keep the above video to around 2 minutes but that meant that I had to cut a couple of the traditional stories that she told, including one about the turtle and the eagle. If you are interested in learning more about our local First Nations history or culture I would encourage you to take a moment to check out the Sncewips Heritage Museum across the bridge: http://www.wfn.ca/museum.htm
Later this year I'll do a full feature on the museum but it's worth checking out and is a great showcase for the heritage, history, and culture that we find in our local First Nations community.
I'm not sure if you have noticed but there definitely seems that there is a resurgence in the connections being made culturally between First Nations and various community groups and partnerships. Another recent example would be the new partnership between the West Kelowna Arts Council and the Kelowna International Airport. The gift shop at YLW will be starting to sell local artists work in the coming months. Learn more about that new partnership at the following link: http://www.swac-arts.com/ylw---swacskyway-ventures-call-to-artists.html
