Cool temperatures at Teck Cup

The cool temperatures did nothing to dissuade competitors from this weekend’s Telemark Nordic Club in West Kelowna where 400 athletes took part in the second Teck B.C. Cup Race of the series.

Saturday featured two different classic sprint courses running side by side simultaneously and the heavy snowfall from last week meant the courses were in great shape for both days.

There were a few spills on the hills and around the tighter corners, making the fast-paced event an exciting one for both racers and spectators.

The multiple distance courses were short and not too hilly but still a good challenge for all age categories.  Local highlights saw Telemark’s Jonah Hawes and Justin Siever finish second and third in the Atom Boys A Final. Other results included: Grayson McKinnon third – Bantam Boy, Ian Williams fourth – Midget Boy, David Walker fifth – Juvenile Boy, Alexandra Myshak-Davis third – Junior Girl.

Sunday was an interval start skate event: the racers started 15 seconds apart and raced  “against the clock”. Course distances ranged from one kilometre for the Atom categories, to 10 km for the Open and Masters Categories.

The courses were challenging but fun with the majority of climbing done in the first half of the five km loop and the downhill segments provided swooping corners and rollers.

Local highlights again saw Jonah Hawes and Justin Siever finish second and third in the Atom Boys. Other results included: Jasmine Filatow fifth – Atom Girl, Ian Mayer fifth – Pee Wee Boy, Michelle Kraetzer fifth – Bantam Girl, Ian Williams fifth – Midget Boy, Gareth Williams second – Juvenile Boy, David Walker fourth – Juvenile Boy, Alexandra Myshak-Davis second – Junior Girl.
