Clear the way

The District of West Kelowna’s snow removal efforts are in full-swing, but it takes more than plows to keep our roads safe for travellers – our sidewalks need attention too.

Residential and commercial property owners are reminded that snow and ice must be removed from sidewalks adjacent to private property within 24 hours of a snow fall to make travelling safe for pedestrians. Uncleared sidewalks can pose a significant danger for pedestrians, particularly for senior citizens and persons with disabilities.

Sidewalks need to be fully cleared of snow and ice, keeping in mind that approximately three-feet width is needed for wheelchairs to pass. Snow removed from sidewalks cannot be deposited on roadways.

The District of West Kelowna removes snow and ice from sidewalks that are adjacent to civic buildings and at selected parks and pedestrian accesses. The District’s Good Neighbour Bylaw outlines what is expected from property owners regarding sidewalk snow removal and is available to view online. 

Residents may also want to keep the following in mind:

• Use caution when walking on icy or snow covered sidewalks; avoid walking on the street

• Wear light-coloured or reflective clothing when walking adjacent to roadways at night

• Motorists are reminded to watch for pedestrians on the roadways and allow extra stopping distance at intersections and crosswalks

• Consider helping elderly or disabled neighbours remove snow from steps and sidewalks.

• Snow plows are unable to avoid depositing snow in front of driveways when clearing streets. To minimize the amount of snow left in front of driveways, please shovel snow to the left side (when facing the property).

• You can aid snow removal efforts by ensuring vehicles are parked off-street to avoid interference with plows and sand/salt trucks.
