West Kelowna fire crews quickly doused a grass fire which started Thursday evening.

Around 5:00 p.m., crews were called out to fight a quickly spreading fire on Old Ferry Wharf Road, which the home owner says started when sparks from a grinder ignited the tinder dry grass in his yard.

Thursday evening.

"The fire was approximately 30 metres by 30 metres and it was burning in the grass at a fairly low intensity," says Assistant Fire Chief Darren Lee.

"We had an initial report that it had burned into a trailer, which it actually turns out is more of a utility or work trailer, and then into the older vehicle beside it."

Lee added that due to the dryness in the area, they responded in force.

"We responded with two engines, two bush trucks, myself and a couple of safety officers. The guys were pretty quick at getting the fire knocked down because it was in grass and now they're working to construct a fire guard around it just in case we missed a little hot spot or something like that. We don't want it creeping anywhere once we leave."

The smoke from the fire was visible for miles once the fire started, but turned out to look worse than it was as crews had it extinguished within 20 minutes of the original call.
