UPDATE: Monday, June 11 11 a.m. - With the return of warmer, drier weather the District of West Kelowna has been able to reopen its sports fields. The municipality would like to thank all of its users for their patience and understanding after heavy rainfall last week forced the closure of sports fields this past weekend.

--------------------------

Due to heavy and persistent rainfall, the District of West Kelowna must regrettably close its sports fields from Friday, June 8 through Sunday, June 10.

The Operations Department has carefully monitored the rainfall situation and made the difficult decision to close the fields for the weekend after water began pooling heavily on fields Friday morning.

Standing water on turf areas and soggy infields could lead to player injuries and cause considerable damage to the fields if played on.

The District of West Kelowna received approximately 20 millimetres of rain Friday morning, in addition to rains that have been falling all week. As a result, fields are heavily saturated.

Another 40 millimetres is predicted to fall within the next 24 to 48 hours.

The precipitation is expected to start again Friday night and continue through Saturday. Sunny skies are forecast for Sunday and Operations Department staff will re-evaluate conditions on Monday morning and provide an update then.

The District of West Kelowna does not take lightly the decision to close sports fields, resulting in the cancellation of soccer, football and baseball games. The municipality thanks all of its users for their understanding.
