Murder charges laid against DWK teen

A 16-year-old girl faces charges of first degree murder in the death of another 16-year-old girl at a house party in Peachland Wednesday night.

The accused and the victim are both residents of West Kelowna and attended Mount Boucherie High School together.

The suspect appeared in a Kelowna courtroom Friday to answer to charges of first degree murder as well as assault with a weapon.

The second charge arises from an altercation the accused had with a 17-year-old female immediately after the fatal stabbing.

Cst. Steve Holmes says the second victim received injuries as a result of the incident.

"The accused had previously been in a verbal altercation with the murder victim prior to the fatal stabbing," says Holmes.

"Police recovered the weapon that was used in both incidents. The injuries to the second victim are considered non-life threatening."

The three girls were at a house party on San Clemente Drive in Peachland where the incidents occurred.

Neighbours says there was a loud, verbal altercation, possibly involving a boy.

Holmes says the murder victim and the accused knew each other.

Photos on several social networking sites show the two girls pictured together.

Names of both victims and the accused are not being revealed due to Young Offenders Act provisions.
