SUV careens through fence

A West Kelowna couple expecting their first child is fed up with increased crime around their neighbourhood, after an allegedly stolen SUV crashed through their fence and almost hit their home Friday night.

Thankfully, Brad and his wife weren't home when the driver of the SUV careened up Elk Road at about 9 p.m. and lost control near the intersection of Cougar Road, crashing through a fence and sending a fence pole through a ground floor window of Brad's home in the Talons development.

A neighbour told Brad that two people got out of the SUV and ran away from the crash site before police arrived on scene. While police were seen searching the area with a K9 unit, it's unclear at this time if the suspects were found.

Brad, who's lived in the area for two years, says this isn't the first time they've dealt with crime in their neighbourhood recently.

“Two weeks ago we watched a guy out our bedroom window beat a guy with a baseball bat on the same corner,” he said, adding that a couple months prior to that, a neighbour's windows were smashed overnight. They've been dealing with lots of thefts as well.

“We've been seeing a lot of this s**t here ... I don't know what to do anymore.”

He says he's going to talk to the police today about the growing issues he's seen on his street.

“We're about to have a kid and my neighbours have small children and it just doesn't feel like a safe neighbourhood,” Brad said. “There's always kids on bikes, biking up and down the street, and people are just flying by in vehicles ... this was bound to happen.”
