Shooting threat at school

Some students at West Kelowna's Mount Boucherie Secondary School say they won't be going to school Friday, after a student reportedly threatened to carry out a shooting at the school that day.

But, the school says the threat has been “dealt with” and staff are “comfortable with the outcome.”

A student (who asked to remain anonymous) says she's among many whose parents aren't letting them attend school Friday, after a student made the threat online.

The tipster says the student who made the threat was given a one-day suspension late last week, but he's “been walking around the hallways since then.”

“He told his friends after his one-day suspension was over to wear red hats so that he doesn’t get them,” the anonymous student said.

MBSS principal Raquel Steen issued a statement to parents on Friday, saying rumours have “created some uncertainty at the school.”

Steen says RCMP have been involved in the situation, and staff at the school have completed an assessment.

“As a result of a very thorough process, along with the RCMP, we are confident that the situation has been dealt with and are comfortable with the outcome,” Steen said.

Kelowna RCMP spokesman Cpl. Jesse O'Donaghey says police were contacted on Feb. 22 after a “currently-enrolled student had uttered a threat towards students and staff of the school.”

O'Donaghey says an investigation was launched, and police continue to work with the school, the student and the student's family, but no charges have been laid.

Regardless, the anonymous student says many students aren't taking any chances.

“My parents are not letting me go, as well as my friend's parents are not letting her go,” she said. “Lots of kids are refusing to go to school and parents are agreeing to let them stay home.”
