Guns drawn in West K

UPDATE: 2:40 p.m.

Two men are in custody following a dramatic takedown in plain view of numerous motorists on Highway 97 near Boucherie Road late Friday morning.

Events began unfolding about 10:30 a.m. when police were called to the Holiday Inn in downtown Westbank after two men were seen trying to open car doors in the parking lot.

They fled the scene in a vehicle reportedly stolen from Vernon earlier in the week.

The vehicle was eventually spotted on Highway 97 near Boucherie. Police stopped the vehicle and, with guns drawn, took the pair into custody without incident.

A 33-year-old Kelowna man and a 44-year-old Vernon man face numerous property related offences.

“Due to the immediate call to our police dispatchers and the quick response of our members,  RCMP were able to locate the stolen vehicle and take two known criminals into custody.” said West Kelowna RCMP Const. David Gauthier.

“This is a prime example of how our community works as a team, and by watching out for each other, we keep our neighbourhoods safe”.

Dramatic images have come from West Kelowna Friday morning.

Motorists in the area of Highway 97 and Boucherie Road sent pictures into Castanet, showing RCMP officers with their guns drawn.

In one image, two officers are standing on the median with guns pointed toward the open driver's door of a red Ford Focus.

Police vehicles were stationed at the side and in front of the stationary vehicle.

Ron Stanley was one of those who witnessed some of the events.

"RCMP have their guns drawn on a car...it didn't look like he wanted to get out of the vehicle," said Stanley.

Stanley says at one point, there were four police vehicles at the scene.

There is no indication at this time as to what precipitated the police response.
