Advance polls slow, steady

The turnout was light but steady as advance polls opened Tuesday in the Kelowna West byelection.

Figures released by Elections BC Wednesday show 842 people cast ballots on the first of six consecutive advance polling days.

By comparison, 2,201 people cast ballots on the first day of advance voting during the 2017 general election.

Five years ago, 2,044 people voted on the first day of polling in the byelection in the same riding, then known as Westside-Kelowna, when Premier Christy Clark attempted to win her way into the legislature after losing in Vancouver.

Advance polls are open today through Sunday from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. at Powers Creek Community Church and Super 8 Motel in West Kelowna, and the Kelowna Curling Club and Grace Baptist Church in Kelowna.

General voting day is next Wednesday, Feb. 14.

The byelection was called after Clark stepped down as both premier and MLA for the riding in August.
