Red sled plowed away

"He's a responsible young man."

Christian Koop's 11-year-old son Taylor is a hard-working young man: He has his babysitting licence, he has chickens and sells eggs, and most recently he started a paper route.

Like a lot of kids his age, he wants to earn money to buy video games.

At Christmas, he received a new sled to help him with his newspaper deliveries.

As the snow fell on Friday afternoon, Taylor loaded up his new, bright-red sled and headed out to do his job.

Shortly into his route, he parked his sled full of newspapers off to the side of a driveway near Webber and McGregor Roads in Glenrosa. That is where Taylor said a plow-truck demolished his new sled.

"A guy just came ripping, probably over the speed limit ... and he didn't stop or slow down, he kept going."

Taylor said the plow nicked the back corner of his sled, grabbing it. The sled was then dragged for a few feet before it swung in front of the plow, "and under the weight of the snow, it was demolished."

"He just kept looking at my sled as he demolished it," Taylor said. "And it was a loud crack. He would have heard it right through the windows of his truck."

The noise was so loud a couple living nearby came out to investigate, according to Taylor's mom.

"(They were) asking repeatedly if Taylor was okay."

Devastated, and in shock, Taylor made his way home.

The family then tracked down a company they thought was responsible.

AEL has been doing the snow removal in West Kelowna since 2012. The Koops assumed one of its trucks must have been the culprit.

After speaking with Dustin Khadikin, senior contract manager, the Koops realized that none of AEL trucks fit the description given by Taylor.

But Khadikin felt for Taylor, and he told the Koops he would pay for a new sled for Taylor.

"I have four kids, and my oldest just gave up a paper route ... I  just want to help," Khadikin said.

The person behind the sled destruction is still unknown. Khadikin said when storms like this hit he often sees "renegades with a pickup truck and a plow" take to the streets to try and make extra money.
