Remembering those lost

Madison Erhardt

The Westbank First Nation community gathered together Wednesday morning outside the Westbank First Nation Health and Wellness Centre for Aboriginal Veterans Day.

"I think it is good to acknowledge our WFN members, our syilx people who have served, both brothers and sisters, in uniform defending this country," said Tom Konek, WFN Councillor.

"This is the first time we are doing it on Nov. 8.", Konek added.

The ceremony included a poem and a song by local elementary students.

"The ceremony is important because it is knowledge that we pass on to the kids. The (children) have to be reminded that we do have veterans like Thomas who are working hard to protect us all, said WFN Councillor Brian Elli.

A number of Remembrance Day ceremonies will be taking place across the Okanagan over the next few days.

UBC Okanagan will hold its 12th Remembrance Day ceremony on Thursday at the university courtyard from 10:45 to 11:30 a.m.
