Sports store closing its doors

Wholesale Sports announced on Thursday it will be closing all 12 of its retail stores in Western Canada, which includes its locations in Westbank and Kamloops.

The company will begin liquidating merchandise on Friday at all of its locations, and will do so until it shuts its doors for good on December 28.

The outdoor outfitter is a subsidiary of United Farmers of Alberta Co-op.

"There were numerous external factors that led to this decision including... the continued shift to online purchases, and an overall slowing of consumer discretionary spending as a whole, Carole Kitchen said, president and CEO of UFA. "The orderly wind down of Wholesale Sports will allow UFA to focus on its core business of agriculture and petroleum."

The company has been operating five retail stores in B.C., five in Alberta, one in Saskatchewan and one in Manitoba.

The location in Westbank had only opened in February of 2014
