Landslide grows bigger

UPDATE: 2:20 p.m.

Mayor Cindy Fortin says the landslide in Peachland is getting larger because of extra ground crumbling during the milder temperatures.

“Some additional soil is continuing to crumble in the areas that were already undermined by the slide, which a lot of that has to do with the mild weather," she said.

Mayor Fortin added the main focus right now is keeping everyone back and making sure residents are safe.

“We just don't know for sure how much it is going to cost for an entire fix but well over a million dollars, which is alarming.”

ORIGINAL: Sunday 4:50 p.m.

A landslide in Peachland has grown much worse.

Renfrew Road lost another big chunk after more of the earth fell from underneath early Sunday morning.

Reports indicate the piece of road, a large chunk coming all the way into the second lane, fell off around 3 a.m.

A worker on site said the section just outside of the fence was unstable and warned people walking their dogs to not walk the section of ground because it was only asphalt.

The two residents directly in front of the landslide noticed cracks in their driveway on Sunday.

The original slide took place about 1 p.m. Jan. 6. The southbound lane of Highway 97 was covered with earth and fallen trees.

The District of Peachland estimated the damage repair of Renfrew Road to be around $1 million on Jan. 6, before the second large chunk fell.
