Evacuated again at Fintry

UPDATE: Monday 6:40 p.m.

Campers at Fintry Provincial Park were allowed back in Monday after being evacuated Sunday night, only to be evacuated again.

High winds prompted the evacuation when several trees came crashing down in the campground, some striking vehicles and trailers.

After campers were allowed to return, some at the scene report sites 1 through 50 were closed for assessment of dangerous trees that could still fall.

Up to 20 trees were reportedly in danger of coming down.

UPDATE: Monday 5:30 a.m.

Campers at Fintry Provincial Park were not allowed to return to their sites overnight.

Displaced camper Maija Daughtry said early this morning she and her children were among those forced to leave the campground after Sunday night's wind storm brought down several trees.

One tree fell on a trailer, and another campsite loop at the popular holiday spot was blocked by fallen trees.

A branch fell and dented her car before they were evacuated.

The Vernon residents returned to their home, but there's no word on what options, if any, were available for out of town campers.

Residents of the Shannon Lake area in West Kelowna also reported numerous trees brought down in the storm.

ORIGINAL: Sunday midnight

Campers have reportedly been evacuated from Fintry Provincial Park, north of West Kelowna.

Strong winds brought down some large trees, prompting the evacuation for safety reasons.

Camper Maija Daughtry said on Facebook: "We have been evacuated from our campsite – big wind storm and big trees have fallen down."

As of about 11 p.m., campers were all parked at an overflow parking lot waiting for instructions.

All trailers and tents were left at the campsites.
