Shot driver in ICU

The victim who was shot while driving his car in West Kelowna on Tuesday is still in hospital.

Const. Jesse O'Donaghey says the man remains in stable condition in the hospital's Intensive Care Unit. 

The investigation is continuing and no further details will be released at this time.

UPDATE: 4:45 p.m.

The Westside hero says he doesn't want to take all the credit.

After a neighbour praised the man for jumping to the aid of a crash victim in West Kelowna, Tuesday night, the man, who asked not to be named, said he wasn't the only one who pitched in.

"There were a bunch of people who helped out," he told Castanet after reading the story.

"It was nice that she said that about me, but I wasn't alone. I just thought I should share that."

UPDATE: 1:30 p.m.

A nearby neighbour, who asked to remain anonymous, says her neighbour helped save the man shot by a cyclist.

While she says she did not hear the gunshots, she did run out of her home when she heard the car crash into the pole.

She witnessed a neighbour run out his door as well, in his pyjamas, and jump into action.

“He ran out and went to the man and he was asking for towels and blankets and doing whatever he could to help the man not bleed out,” she says.

“I think he really should be recognized, he really did save his life until the paramedics showed up.”

While she does not know the man's name, she says he was a hero in the situation.

“I believe he is the one that saved his life, in a lot of ways.”

UPDATE: 12:20 p.m.

Castanet has learned a man on a bike shot a driver several times, prompting the driver to retaliate by crashing into him.

Police confirmed the details early Wednesday afternoon.

Kelowna RCMP Const. Jesse O’Donaghey said a man on a bike fired multiple rounds into the vehicle, causing serious injuries to the driver. The driver then struck the gunman.

The confrontation took place at about 10:15 p.m. Tuesday on Hudson Road in West Kelowna.

RCMP responded, bringing along a K-9 unit to track the shooter.

“The suspect was located by officers, along with police service dog ‘Ice,’ hiding in the immediate area and suffering from injuries believed to be non-life threatening in nature,” says O’Donaghey. “The RCMP believe that this was a targeted incident, not a random attack.”

The shooting victim, a 48-year-old Kelowna man, was rushed to hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspected shooter, a 29-year-old West Kelowna man, is in police custody and faces charges.

RCMP are still investigating the scene.

UPDATE: 8 a.m. 

West Kelowna RCMP still on scene Wednesday morning tell Castanet the investigation continues after a cyclist was struck last night.

Officers on the scene have secured a crime scene right around the car wash at Hudson Road and Highway 97.

A black sedan remains bent around a light standard while a crushed mountain bike can be seen lying on the sidewalk behind it.

Officers tell Castanet the cyclist was rushed to hospital last night, his condition is currently unknown.

RCMP are expecting to release more information on the incident this morning.

ORIGINAL: 6 a.m. 

A seemingly minor car crash resulted in a major police presence Tuesday night in West Kelowna.

A black sedan crashed into a lamp standard at Highway 97 and Hudson Road in West Kelowna about 10:15 p.m.

One person was loaded into an ambulance at the nearby car wash with what is believed to have been serious injuries.

A heavy police presence was reported by several Castanet readers, with the scene taped off and reports of at least five police cruisers gathered.

They were still on the scene just before 1 a.m., along with police dog units searching the area.
