Garden in a bucket

Give a man a zucchini and he eats for a day, but teach a man to garden and he won’t go hungry.

That’s the philosophy behind a program being offered through the Central Okanagan Community Food Bank.  A number of community partners have teamed up to help the West Kelowna branch of the Central Okanagan Food Bank provide fresh produce and a fresh perspective on gardening.

On Sunday May 15 Incredible Edibles Okanagan will be mentoring Westside Food Bank clients teaching gardening basics and helping them create their own bucket gardens.

"We live in such a rich agricultural community, there’ no reason people should be food insecure," said Lois Beischer of Incredible Edibles. "It’s exciting to be able to share garden skills with people who are keen to learn. By planting food for and with clients, we are educating everyone on the importance of healthy, locally grown nutritious food.”

Choices’ Market Exec Vice President Richard Lockhart is a big supporter of the program.

“Choices Markets is happy to support our communities in any way we can," Lockhart said. "We truly believe that teaching people about health is far better than giving people food for a day."

The event is taking place at the West Kelowna branch of the Central Okanagan Food Bank, at 2545 Churchill Road. Planting will begin at 12:45 p.m. on Sunday.
