House fire victim named

Police have identified the woman whose body was discovered in a suspicious house fire last week.

The body of Hazel Delgado Budiongan, 37, was found in her home when RCMP and West Kelowna firefighters responded to the fire on Boucherie Road, Nov. 4.

“An autopsy was conducted, and the deceased was conclusively identified as Budiongan, a resident of the address of the suspicious fire,” says Const. Jesse O'Donaghey.

“The house fire and the circumstances surrounding Hazel’s death have been deemed suspicious.”

O'Donaghey says police believe this was an isolated incident and there is no danger to the public.

“The West Kelowna RCMP General Investigation Section will continue to work in conjunction with the B.C. Coroners Service to investigate and determine the cause of Hazel’s death,” says O'Donaghey.

On Facebook, friends and family are asking for donations so Budiongan's mother and young son can fly to Canada from the Philippines to pay their respects.

“Hazel's death was a shock to a lot of people who knew and loved her. It was such a tragedy that she died far away from her family,” Cookie Laguda-Alicaya wrote on the GoFundMe page.

“Hazel had always worked hard for her family back in the Philippines. She sacrificed time away from them just to make sure she provided her 12-year-old son and mom the necessities of life.”
