West Kelowna Council has decided to scrap its current policy and create a bylaw to regulate council remuneration.
Council gave first reading to the new bylaw Tuesday.
Prior to creation of the bylaw, council just had a policy which tied raises to the rate of inflation (Consumer Price Index) and allowed council to review the policy just prior to an election.
"Instead of having policies which are easy to change, the proposal is to put it into a one-stop kind of bylaw so it is entrenched," says Mayor Doug Findlater.
"If it is going to be changed it will have to go through a longer process."
Findlater says the only real change from the past policy is in the timing of any review.
"Right now, we are doing this within six months of an election which politicizes the process," says Findlater.
"What we are proposing is that it will be reviewed in the third year of the (new) four year term so it takes away the politics and gives you time to do something before an election."
Only councillor Carol Zanon voted against the bylaw.
