The District of West Kelowna is closing Gellatly Road from approximately Witt Road to Angus Drive.
The closure is necessary while the municipality conducts immediate repairs to the bank below the road, which could impact road infrastructure.
It's not known how long the road will be closed or how long the repairs will take.
Smith Creek runs parallel to this section of Gellatly Road and, earlier this week, the bank below this section began to erode.
The District commissioned geotechnical and hydrological reports on the erosion and the results indicate that there is potential for further erosion of the steep bank, particularly with rain in the forecast.
In the interest of public safety, the road has been closed while immediate repairs are undertaken.
The transit stop in this location has been temporarily closed as well.
Witt Road residents will be able to access their properties as usual.
Motorists can access lower Gellatly Road from the south via Highway 97 and the Glenrosa overpass or from the north via Boucherie Road.
Angus Drive can be accessed via lower Gellatly Road.
West Kelowna Council has budgeted for the design of an upgrade to this section of Gellatly Road which will be undertaken later this year.
