Flaming streetsweeper

Video by Joshua Roberge - submitted March 28.

UPDATE 12:15 P.M. Friday, March 28:  Fire officials believe the fire may have started as a result of a spark that ignited debris inside the sweeper's hopper. The vehicle belonged to a private contractor and not the District of West Kelowna.

UPDATE 9:45 p.m. Thursday Mar. 27.

The street sweeper's back end re-ignited and fire crews were called back to scene at around 9 p.m.

Witnesses on the scene say fire crews were able to quickly get it back under control and the fire is now out.

A street sweeper caught fire in front of the Hudson Road Elementary School in West Kelowna Thursday evening.

Witnesses report that at approximately 7:45 p.m. the vehicle ignited.

Fire halls 31 and 32 attended.

No injuries were reported and the end of the truck was apparently destroyed by the fire.

Reports are coming in that the sweeper has caught fire again and fire crews are heading back to the scene.

We will have more details as they become available.
