Driver loses tire, wheel & then vehicle

Raw video of the RCMP stopping a vehicle that lost a tire and a wheel in West Kelowna.

The sparks were flying off the backend of a vehicle as police gave chase to a suspected drunk driver in West Kelowna over the weekend.

A 49-year-old Summerland woman is facing potential impaired driving charges after a vehicle lost its rear tire and rim last night (Dec. 15).

At 5:45 p.m. an off-duty RCMP officer spotted a possible impaired driver northbound on Highway 97 heading from Summerland towards West Kelowna. A brown Kia Sorrento was observed to be all over the road and appeared to be losing a tire.

Uniformed members of the West Kelowna RCMP intercepted the vehicle at Trepanier Bench Road and attempted to initiate a vehicle stop. The Kia continued towards West Kelowna, and was observed to nearly drive into the ditch several times. The SUV lost its right rear tire, followed by the rim, and eventually spun out of control near Brown Road. The driver was taken into custody and transported to the Kelowna Detachment where she provided breath samples in excess of four times the legal limit.

RCMP say it was very fortunate no one was injured.

The woman was issued a 24 hour Driving Prohibition, an Administrative Driving Prohibition and her vehicle was impounded. She faces potential charges of Impaired Driving, Driving While Over .08, and Flight From Police. She was released on a Promise to Appear.

To report impaired drivers, call 9-1-1.
