Improvements at Grizzly Road complete

Construction work at the intersection of Highway 97 and Grizzly Road on the Westside are now complete.

The $2M project included new raised concrete medians to channel and protect vehicles at the intersection, changed traffic patterns to reduce the risk of collisions, as well as improve lighting and better drainage.

The construction project began in September.

Now that upgrades are complete vehicles are not permitted to turn left from Grizzly Road onto Highway 97 or travel directly across the highway which will reduce the number of crashes, in particular head-on and t-bone crashes.

Vehicles will be able to make right turns on Grizzly Road from the highway and onto the highway from Grizzly.

"The safety of our roads is a top priority for communities and for this government," says Premier Christy Clark, the MLA for Westside-Kelowna.

The intersection has been the scene of numerous serious and fatal accidents over the years.

While the intersection sits in Westbank First Nation land it is one West Kelowna Mayor Doug Findlater has been advocating for change for several years.

Improving the intersection is one of several improvements already complete or on the books for the Highway 97 corridor through West Kelowna and WFN.

Next up, advance left turn signals are expected to be installed at Highway 97 and Ross Road in conjunction with construction of the new transit exchange by the Super 8 Motel.
