Foote top west defenceman

The honours continue to mount for Kelowna Rockets defenceman Cal Foote.

A first round selection of the NHL's Tampa Bay Lightning in 2017, Foote Wednesday was named the top defenceman in the WHL's Western Conference.

He will vie for league honours with Kale Clague of the Moose Jaw Warriors.

Foote was also named to the Western Conference first all-star team.

The plaudits came just days after Foote was named Rockets top defenceman for a second straight year and most valuable player.

Foote finished the just-completed regular season with 19 goals and 70 points, both just two shy of club records established by Madison Bowey and Tyson Barrie respectively.

Barrie was named the league's top defenceman following the 2009-2010 season, as was head coach Jason Smith, who won the award as a member of the Regina Pats in 1992-93.

League awards will be handed out May 2 in Red Deer, Alta.

Rockets forward Dillon Dube was also named to the Western Conference second all-star team.
