Rockets take out Ams

Kelowna Rockets head coach Jason Smith said the team needed to be able to build on Saturday's inspiring overtime win over the Regina Pats.

They did just that Wednesday in a dominating 4-1 win over the Tri-City Americans.

The Americans, the number two team in the U.S. Division, had lost just three times on home ice coming into the game. They had been averaging better than four-and-a-half goals a game in the process.

Wednesday, the Rockets were the better team from start to finish.

Kelowna built up a 2-0 lead after one period on goals from Nolan Foote and Jordan Borstmayer.

Kole Lind scored in the second period to up the lead to 3-0.

Vladislav Lukin got one of those back from Tri-City midway through the third before Tomas Soustal iced it with less than three minutes to go.

Michael Herring faced just 21 shots as the Rockets outshot Tri-City 45-21 on the night.

Prior to the game the Rockets and Regina Pats pulled off a three-player deal.

The Rockets sent 17-year-old defenceman Jonathon Smart to the Pats in exchange for 19-year-old defenceman James Hilsendager, and 17-year-old forward prospect Erik Gardiner.

President and general manager Bruce Hamilton pulled off the deal after learning defenceman Gordie Balhorn would be lost to the team for up to six weeks with a hand injury.

"With the loss of Gordie, we felt we needed to get another older defenceman in here and Jonathan Smart was the player Regina wanted,” he said.

"This brings us some depth on defence with a veteran player. With Erik, he has 10 goals in the SJHL as a 17-year-old and was caught in a numbers game in Regina. We look forward to him being a player for us in the future.”

Hilsendager has three assists and 14 penalty minutes in 18 games this season, while Gardiner played in two games with the Pats before joining the Humboldt Broncos in the Saskatchewan Junior League.

He has 10 goals in 14 games in Humboldt.

Smart is in his second season with the Rockets. In 68 games, he has three goals and 21 assists.

Hilsendager should be in the line-up for games in Spokane Friday and back home Saturday against the Brandon Wheat Kings.
