Rockets add goaltender

Jackson Whistle needs more time to rehab his injured hip.

To that end, the Kelowna Rockets have added goaltender Brodan Salmond to the roster for the balance of the season.

Salmond, 17, has played this season with the Camrose Kodiaks of the AJHL.

In 20 games, he has posted an 11-6-0 record with a 3.02 goals against average.

“Jackson hasn’t come along as fast as we had hoped and we continue to assess his recovery,” said president/GM Bruce Hamilton.

“This is an insurance move on our part to bring another goaltender into our organization."

The Rockets shut down Whistle at the beginning of January in hopes two or three weeks of rehab would help. He practiced last week but was not ready to return to the lineup on the weekend.

Michael Herringer has started all 12 games with Kelowna Chief netminder Brady Lenardon serving as the backup.

Salmond is expected to arrive in town Wednesday meaning Lenardon will backup Herringer again Tuesday when the Rockets host Lethbridge.

Salmond was a 10th round draft pick of the Rockets in 2013. He is being added as an affiliate player.

“As a 17-year-old Brodan has done everything we’ve asked him to do this season,” said Camrose coach/GM Boris Rybalka.

“He has a tremendous work ethic, his compete and battle level is very high and he has a great attitude. I think he’s going to come to Kelowna and push their goaltenders and help them have success.”
