Coach search nears an end

Bruce Hamilton hopes to be able to announce a new coach next week.

The Kelowna Rockets president and GM has been looking for a new bench boss since Dan Lambert stepped down three weeks ago.

Lambert, who had just finished his rookie campaign as head coach of the Rockets, left to take an assistant job with the NHL's Buffalo Sabres.

"I wanted it to be done two weeks ago," said Hamilton.

"I want the right guy and the first guy we went after we lost (former U of A head coach Ian Herbers). Since then I've had a couple of guys in and interviewed and I'm just not where I want to be yet."

Hamilton said he has two more candidates coming in over the long weekend and hopes to be able to name his guy after that.

"We're going to get a good guy. I've got two real solid guys coming this weekend I believe so I'll be spending time with them."

Hamilton said he has heard from plenty of people interested in the job from all across the hockey spectrum.

However, none of those include guys currently working in the NHL.

"Of course you get all the Junior A guys. Then I've had a few U.S. college guys. I've had a number of Canadian college guys then I have a whole bunch of East Coast and American league guys," said Hamilton.

"I'm not worried if they're in the East Coast, the American league or where they are, I just want a guy who understands the philosophy that we've started here."

And, while he said the new coach will make his decision as to the make-up of his staff, Hamilton believes current assistant coaches Kris Mallette and Travis Crickard are solid guys.

He hopes one of them will move to the forefront and can be the next head coach when the new man moves on.

"Whoever we hire, I'm quite sure will be gone in a couple of years again...just the way the game is going."

The new head coach will take over a team that went to overtime in the Memorial Cup final and a team that has a chance to repeat as Western Hockey League champions.

Despite losing several top flight players, the Rockets will return a stable full of talent, especially up front.

The new coach won't have long to get familiar with his new club. Training camp begins in just five weeks.
