Rockets, Hawks...again

It was always meant to be.

The Kelowna Rockets and Portland Winterhawks will face off in the Western Hockey League's Western Conference final.

The match-up was made official Sunday when Portland beat Everett 3-2, eliminating the Silvertips in five games.

It'll be the fourth time in five years these Western Conference rivals will turn their attention to each other in the post season.

Only this time the Rockets hope to write a new ending.

Portland has won the previous three meetings, winning in six in the second round in 2011, four games in the first round in 2012 and five games in last season's Western Conference final.

The Winterhawks also held the edge over the regular season winning both games in Kelowna 4-3...one in overtime and 3-2 at home in overtime. The Rockets lone win was a 5-0 victory in the season's first meeting.

All four games were played in the first two months of the season.

Those games came before the Rocket roster makeover which included the additions of forwards Leon Draisaitl, Gage Quinney and Chance Braid and defenceman Josh Morrissey.

The Winerhawks have added defenceman Adam Henry who has 26 points in 42 games and Mitchell Walter who has yet to register a point in 29 regular season and post season games.

Portland advanced to the Western Conference final beating Seattle in six and Everett in five while the Rockets swept Tri-City in four then dispatched of Victoria in five.

For the Rockets to have success in this series they will have to contend with Portland's big three of Oliver Bjorkstrand, Nic Petan and Chase De Leo.

That trio has combined for 20 goals and 49 points in 11 games. Bjorkstrand leads the WHL with 10 post season goals while Petan leads in helpers with 12.

Bjorkstrand lead the league in scoring over the regular season with 118 points including a league high 63 goals.

Leon Draisaitl leads the Rockets in playoff scoring with four goals and 15 points while Tyson Baillie and Rourke Chartier share the goal scoring lead with seven.

The series begins At Prospera Place with games one and two Friday and Saturday night. The teams will then travel to Portland for games three and four next Tuesday and Wednesday.
