Rockets slay Giants in OT

Leon Draisaitl had four points and Madison Bowey scored in overtime leading the Kelowna Rockets past the desperate Vancouver Giants 4-3 Friday in Vancouver.

Bowey blasted a one-timer off a perfect setup from Draisaitl past Cody Porter on a Rockets power-play just 65 seconds into the extra period.

The Giants, who needed wins in their final two games and a lot of help to squeak into the playoffs, trailed 2-1 after two before turning it up in the third period.

Dawson Holt with his first career WHL goal and Alec Baer on a Giants power-play moved the Giants ahead by one.

Draisaitl on a Kelowna power-play with four minutes left in the third to tie it and force overtime.

The one-timer from the right circle on a perfect feed from Bowey snapped a six game goalless drought for Draisaitl.

Tyson Baillie with his first goal in seven games and Chance Braid also scored for the Rockets.

Draisaitl's four points was his 15th multiple point game in 31 starts for the Rockets.

Michael Herringer stopped 23 shots to register the win for the Rockets.

The win kept the Rockets hopes of finish first in the overall WHL standings alive.

Brandon must lose Saturday at home to Moose Jaw to give the Rockets a chance to finish with their second straight regular season title.

The playoff picture also became a bit clearer Friday.

Tri-City's 4-2 win over Portland coupled with the Cougars 3-1 win over Kamloops moved the Americans two points clear of Kamloops in the battle for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

The Americans need just a single point from their final two games to clinch a playoff berth and a first round date with the Rockets.

For Kamloops to finish eighth they would have to win Saturday in Prince George and hope Tri-City lose its final two games in regulation time.

If that were to happen the two teams would meet in a one game playoff to determine the Rockets first round opponent.

Kelowna closes out the regular season Saturday night when they conclude the home-and-home series with the Giants.
