Man identified in care home homicide

Vernon RCMP have released the name of an 85-year-old man who died earlier this week as a result of an assault, allegedly at the hands of his 95-year-old care home roommate.

The man has been identified as William George May, a long time resident of Vernon. May died as a result of his injuries in the assault at the Polson Extended Care home on Sunday night.

"Earlier today, family members called the Vernon RCMP detachment and advised they would like to have dad’s name released to the public so people would know who it was instead of him always being referred to as the victim," says RCMP Spokesperson Gord Molendyk.

The accused attacker, John Furman, has been charged with murder and is currently being held at a psychiatric facility in Kamloops where he will undergo a mental health assessment.

The case has sparked considerable debate in the media amidst concerns over funding, staffing levels, and training in specialized psychiatric care centres for seniors with dementia and other progressive illnesses.
