Enderby woman killed in crash

UPDATE: July 18, 4 p.m. - The BC Coroners Service has confirmed the identity of a woman who died following a motor vehicle incident near Enderby on July 17, 2013. She was Peggy (Margaret) Irene Ann Armstrong, aged 49, of Enderby. Ms. Armstrong was the driver of a minivan that was in a head-on collision with a semi-trailer on Highway 97A south of Enderby at about 4 p.m. on July 17. Ms. Armstrong was deceased at the scene. The BC Coroners Service and RCMP continue to investigate this death.

Update: July 18 -- The following release has just been issued by Gord Molendyk of the Vernon/North Okanagan RCMP.

"Wednesday afternoon at about 4:05 p.m., the North Okanagan RCMP were called to a two-vehicle MVA on Hwy 97A, south of Enderby. A Chevy Astro van was traveling northbound. A witness who was travelling behind the van observed it weaving on the road and crossing the center line. The witness told police the van crossed the center line and went completely into the southbound lane where it almost hit a motorcycle. The motorcyclist was able to avoid colliding with the van by pulling onto the shoulder of the road.

After passing the motorcyclist, the van continued in the lane where it collided head on with a southbound semi-truck pulling a trailer. Witnesses said the van spun several times before coming to a rest in the ditch. The left side of the van immediately caught fire. Witnesses to the accident ran to the van and were able to remove a two-year-old boy from a car seat in the back of the van; he sustained minor injuries as a result of the crash. They were unable remove the driver before the vehicle became fully engulfed in flames. The driver of the van was a 49-year-old Enderby woman.

The semi-truck and trailer came to rest in the ditch and the driver, a 36-year-old man from Peachland, was taken to hospital for treatment as he sustained broken wrists in the crash.

The RCMP and the BC Coroners service continue to investigate this file. The name of the van's driver is expected to be released by the Coroner after all next of kin have been notified."

Update: Highway 97A reopened at 10 p.m. Wednesday.

At least one person is dead as a result of a two vehicle crash on Highway 97A just south of Enderby.
