Vernon woman nabbed in flood scam

A 24-year-old Vernon woman is facing fraud charges in connection with a Southern Alberta flood relief donut scam that allegedly cost numerous Edmonton and area residents thousands of dollars in savings.

West Division Patrol members were flagged down by a Good Samaritan on Saturday, July 13, 2013, who informed police that a female suspect matching the description of a photo released by EPS was inside a west-end grocery store soliciting donations.

EPS members subsequently attended inside the grocery store and arrested Shalayne Whitney Lewis and charged her with fraud (x 4) and possession of instruments for forgery.

Investigators believe the accused was falsely soliciting donations through the sale of boxes of donuts in support of Southern Alberta flood victims in numerous shopping outlets throughout Edmonton and area.

Anyone who might have also fallen victim to this alleged scam is asked to contact the Edmonton Police Service at 780-423-4567 or #377 from a mobile phone.
