Effective May 16th, loads of yard waste and prunings up to 20 cm (8”) weighing less than 250 kgs (550 lbs) can be dropped off at the Glenmore and Westside Landfills for no charge. Yard waste and prunings weighing more than 250 kgs will be charged $25/tonne, regardless of its origin.
Residents have been able to self-haul and dispose of unlimited amounts of yard waste (grass clippings, leaves, garden plants, etc.) and prunings up to 20 cm (8”) at local landfills for no charge. Yard maintenance companies and other businesses were charged $25/tonne for disposal.
“In the past, the definitions of residential and commercial yard waste were confusing and caused problems,” reports Carol Suhan, Waste Reduction Coordinator. “As a result, it was decided the definitions of commercial and residential yard waste needed to be changed.”
Suhan adds, “The 250 kg definition for commercial and residential yard waste has been used successfully in the South Okanagan for several years. It is expected to have a similar response here.”
For more information about yard waste disposal, check the Regional District’s website at www.regionaldistrict.com or call the Regional Waste Reduction Office at 868-5250.
