Vernon left off Ironman list

The City of Vernon learned on Friday that it has not been short-listed to host the World Triathlon Corporation (WTC) Ironman race.

The WTC announced they had selected three finalists from among the initial entries vying to replace Penticton as host of the event.

“Unfortunately we are out of the running to be the new host for Ironman Canada. WTC has narrowed it down to two communities from BC and one from Ontario," says Kevin Poole, Manager of Economic Development & Tourism.

"WTC told us that we put in a fantastic bid and the community support was evident. However, the primary decision was based on where they felt their athletes wanted to go, so they looked closely at what they considered to be resort communities and 'mid-major' markets."

Poole also said they were told by the WTC that their bid was very competitive.

"In that respect, I think we should be proud of what we accomplished in such a short period of time."

Acting City of Vernon Mayor, Mary-Jo O’Keefe also admitted to being disappointed, "but I’m proud of how well our staff, council and community pulled together and showcased our community at its best. I thank our whole community for that.”

Kelowna and Whistler were the two BC finalists along with Huntsville, Ontario.

The World Triathlon Corporation will announce the new host community on October 10, 2012.
