New bus wheels into town

Greater Vernon Recreation Services unveiled its new Chevrolet StarCraft 2012 bus, which will be used to transport children, seniors and adults to and from programs. The bus is a Para-transit bus with 21 seats plus two wheelchair spaces.

The $84,560 to purchase the bus was made possible by the Kalamalka Rotary Club, the Government of Canada and the Regional District of the North Okanagan.

Greater Vernon KidSport applied for assistance from the Kalamalka Rotary Club, through their annual Dream Auction. Kalamalka Rotary came through and donated $50,000 to Greater Vernon KidSport to purchase the bus to help children get to after school programs and sports.

Beth Marks from Kalamalka Rotary says, “Our club this year sought out a way to put dream auction funds into a project that will benefit working families in the North Okanagan and love the notion of all kids being able to play!  We were impressed with the KidSport Program and the way students are helped in such a way that there is no embarrassment for families in a pinch.”

The bus was also funded in part by the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program in the amount of $25,000. To help seniors access a broader base of activities, the Vernon Senior’s Recreational Society will use the bus to take seniors on local outings and monthly trips around the Okanagan valley.

"Our government recognizes the diversity of skills, knowledge and experience seniors contribute to our society and the economy,” said Colin Mayes, Member of Parliament for Okanagan-Shuswap.

“Through initiatives such as this one, we are helping to ensure that seniors maintain a high quality of life and continue to be active members of their communities.”

The remaining $9,560 came from the Regional District of the North Okanagan (RDNO) so that Greater Vernon Recreation.

Patrick Nicol, RDNO Board Chair, said, "The bus has already enhanced summer camp programs. This bus will be a wonderful asset to the programs of the Rec. Centre for years to come. This is a great example of all parts of our community, working together under the vision of KidSport."
