One house is destroyed and another is saved after firefighters worked quickly to help stop a fast spreading blaze, Monday night.

Coldstream fire crews were called to 8119 Stoneridge Drive, just before 8 p.m. after receiving reports of a garage on fire.

Fire Chief Shane Code says crews arrived on scene to find flames 50 feet high and the first building totally engulfed.

"Flames had spread to a second residence where the shingles of the roof  were now on fire and we decided we had to work on protecting the second home."

Code says the rain gutter was beginning to melt on the second home and windows had to be smashed out but fire crews managed to save the structure.

Witnesses tell Castanet that smoke from the blaze could be seen from across Kalamalka Lake.

Three people who were inside the first home managed to escape safely and were placed in the care of emergency services.

The second home was also evacuated, but the five people who lived inside were able to return to their house later in the evening.

Code says the fire, which appears to have started in the garage of the first home, is under investigation but does not  seem to be suspicious.

Lavington volunteer fire department also assisted with the two alarm blaze, which was quickly extinguished within four hours.
