RCMP have a Kelowna man in custody following an armed robbery at the Lakeview Market in Vernon late Sunday afternoon.

According to police, a masked man armed with a box cutter robbed the store about 5 p.m. Sunday.

The suspect fled on foot before getting into a black 2000 Grand AM. The store clerk was able to provide police with the licence plate number.

Spokesman Gord Molendyk says the vehicle was registered to an owner in Kelowna.

He says Kelowna RCMP were alerted.

Just before 6 p.m. police spotted the vehicle, stopped it and took the driver into custody.

He was identified as the owner of the vehicle.

A search of the vehicle turned up items associated with the robbery.

The unidentified man, with an extensive criminal history dating back eight years, is being charged with robbery.

He is expected to appear in Vernon Provincial Court sometime on Monday.
